The rest is speed/handling. Maces need a buff, but they are good against armor. You just have to find the right Axe really, you can find one with comparable cut dmg. In RBM the best Axe has even more cut dmg than the best sword and Axes/Maces are better unless you have a very high sword skill.
r/mountandblade is incredibly active and I see the occasional warband post there as well as bannerlord. Give them a follow as well. And yes, warband is super janky but lots of fun and it has a great management aspect, which seems like it will appeal to you.
