I would guess that the reversing sensors aren't wired through the tailgate loom that is subject to breakage. Rear LED's on the boot section on my Giulietta are intermittant, don't work when boot down, do work when boot is half way up. Obviously a crack / break in the wiring. Took it to my local mechanic who I 100% trust to see if he could sort it.
